She Held My Hand - Steven Delopoulos
Posted by Ben Chilcote Thursday, December 31, 2009 0 comments

Lately, I've been listening to Steven Delopoulos's newest (2nd solo) album, Straightjacket a lot. Steven Delop-o-who? Remember the group Burlap to Cashmere? He was the main guy from that band.  This is a video of him performing his song, She Held My Hand.  I've really come to love his music.

New Project Coming in 2010 - Songs from the Office
Posted by Ben Chilcote Wednesday, December 30, 2009 1 comments

Next year I plan to launch a new creative project. On my other blog, I have plenty of raw material for content. On this blog, however, creative projects take more time.  I am pretty busy and already am on very tight time budget which allows me little time for extra blogging as it is. Fortunately for my blogs, I love blogging, so I make time for it. Unfortunately for other important things, they say "hey, no fair - get me done!"  I hope this new project will require only a small investment on my part and bring a lot of value to those interested in this website. (my Mom, wife and 4 friends).

What is Songs from the Office? Hmmmm. I could tell you. But how about you just come back and find out on January 5th. How's that for a marketing scheme. If you are bright, you may be able to formulate a hypothesis as to what this creative project might be based merely on the title of it.

If you are the type of person who would really like to check it out but are pretty sure you won't remember, I have a solution for you. All you have to do is put your email address in the little box at the top of this blog and hit enter. Follow a few simples steps after that and you'll be subscribed to this blog. All you have to do after that is forget all about it until an email pops into your inbox to let you know there's a new post.

Disclaimer.  Songs from the Office is NOT about the TV show, The Office, though that is one of my favorite shows.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Posted by Ben Chilcote Tuesday, December 29, 2009 0 comments

On the last Sunday of the year, at our church, we usually do a family-friendly service with a little different approach. The theme this past Sunday was "You Can't Take It Back" and it was all about how we communicate with each other. The idea is that once you say something, you can't take it back so use your words for good, not bad.

One element of the service was a parody I wrote of the song, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. I really liked the way it turned out. I'm not sure of all the copyright issues for parodies (I'd have to ask my friend, Al Yankovic on that one) so I'll just post the original lyrics here. You can sing it yourself. Enjoy!

Insert Shoe
(Parody of Grandma God Run Over By A Reindeer)
by Ben Chilcote

Once you say a word you can’t unsay it
Words you say are permanent as ink
Once a word is thrown you can’t retrieve it
So make sure you don’t speak before you think

They were dressing for the party
He was putting on his tie
The commotion in the closet
Let him know her favorite dress was growing tight
Then she asked for his opinion
Panic welled up from within
His hesitation gave the answer
Let’s just face it there’s no way that he could win

CHORUS

She was up late on her Facebook
Writin’ emails on the side
Someone’s email made her angry
So she spoke her mind and shot off her reply
Friends on Facebook posted comments
Some were laughing, some appalled
In terror she checked in her sent box
Sure enough her mouse had clicked on “Reply All”! (Reply All!?)

CHORUS

He smiled and said “Congratulations”
Then he exclaimed, “When are you due?”
A sailor would have been embarrassed
By the colorful rebuttal that ensued
If your mouth gets you in trouble
And you don’t know what to do
Either find a hole to jump in,
Or turn away, open mouth and insert shoe

CHORUS

The Technium: 1,000 True Fans

The Technium: 1,000 True Fans

Thank you to my friend Andy for sending me this link. Interesting idea, 1000 True Fans. Basically, it proposes that if you have 1000 True Fans you can make a living in your niche. For me, that would probably mean music. It sure is a tempting venture to pursue.

My musical pursuits have been interesting throughout my life. When I was in high school I actually used to pray that I would get to be in a Christian band some day. After a year or so in music ministry it dawned on me that I play in a (more or less, cover) band every week. My prayer came true.

I won't deny that time to time I daydream about what it would be like to be a full-time performer. It would so work for me, too. My wife doesn't work and our kids our homeschooled so they could all come with me (if my family couldn't join me, there'd be no deal)

To be honest, for me to pursue a music career right now would be self-serving. I can say for certain that God isn't giving me any hint that He wants me to pursue a music career - even a side hobby career. For now, I'll continue to explore things like this blog, my other blog, and above all, obedience to God because I did, after all, make him in charge of my life.

I'm not naive, though. I've had many people over the years make comments to me that have made me confident that God has gifted me in a way to use music to minister to people. That is also a tempting venture to pursue. But I need to make sure my motives are right and that I'm not just trying to be popular. Or do things so people will compliment me and make me feel good about myself. God gave me my gifts to serve others and He will be the one to take care of my and my family's needs. I'm pretty sure that's what Jesus meant when He said seek first the Kingdom of God.

In the coming year I have some ideas to use my gifts to share with others over the internet. So for my 3 True Fans, stay tuned!

Some of My Favorite Christmas Songs
Posted by Ben Chilcote Tuesday, December 22, 2009 0 comments

As a worship leader I preview a good amount of Christmas music to use in our services. Over the years there have been a few that I always come back to. Here are three of my favorite slower songs for Christmastime.

Mary's Prayer by Bebo Norman.
Sleep baby Jesus
Close your weary eyes
Hide yourself in faithful dreams
Before yo live yor life
Slip away to heaven
And rest in gentle peace
Never to awaken
The Lord your soul to keep

Cause your feet will walk on water
Your eye will pierce the dark
Your heart will save the souls of men
Your hands will bear the scars

Sleep baby Jesus
For now your time has come
To heal the wounded leper
To calm the raging storm
With perfect steps of perfect grace
You leave behind your fear
And walk along these dusty roads
Though your fate is clear

'Cause your feet walk on water
Your eyes pierce the dark
Your heart will save the souls of men
Your hands will bear the scars

Sleep baby Jesus
My Father and my child
Beneath this broken cross of sin
Stained with men's denial
And though you now are breathless
With thorns upon your head
Your body has been broken
So your children can be fed

'Cause your feet have walked on water
Your eye have pierced the dark
Your heart as saved the souls of men
Your hands now bear the scars

A Cradle Prayer by Rebecca St. James.
Jesus I love you my Lord my life
Where would I be without you
Here in the quiet, the still, the night
I am in awe of you

Trials may come and friends they may go
What really matters is you my Lord

Beautiful Savior my God, my friend
I am in awe of you
Lord I am in awe of you

Trials may come and friends they may go
What really matters is you my Lord

Jesus I love you my Lord my life
Where would I be without you
Here in the quiet, the still, the night
I am in awe of you

Why would you, Creator and King
Come as a baby for all, for me

Beautiful Savior, my God, my friend
I am in awe of you
I am in awe of you

Welcome To Our World by Chris Rice.
Tears are falling, hearts are breaking
How we need to hear from God
You've been promised, we've been waiting

Welcome Holy Child
Welcome Holy Child

Hope that you don't mind our manger
How I wish we would have known
But long-awaited Holy Stranger
Make Yourself at home
Please make Yourself at home
Bring Your peace into our violence
Bid our hungry souls be filled
Word now breaking Heaven's silence

Welcome to our world
Welcome to our world

Fragile finger sent to heal us
Tender brow prepared for thorn
Tiny heart whose blood will save us
Unto us is born
Unto us is born
So wrap our injured flesh around You
Breathe our air and walk our sod
Rob our sin and make us holy

Perfect Son of God
Perfect Son of God
Welcome to our world

Fourth Avenue - Part 3
Posted by Ben Chilcote Monday, December 21, 2009 0 comments

In my final blog post tribute to Fourth Avenue, I share Fourth Avenue's Promotional Video featured on their YouTube Channel. (They have a bunch of recent concert video footage posted there.)

Like I said, Fourth Avenue was a great experience. I traveled to about a dozen states (or more) and even got to travel to the Netherlands to sing on a new Holland-American cruise liner. (We were paid entertainment on the docked ship while VIPs toured the new vessel for 2 days.)

Check out www.fourthavenue.com. If you're interested in a cappella and supporting local artists, purchase the newest CD, High Energy Harmony. This was recorded live while I was still in the group and is a really good cd. And if you ever get a chance, check out Fourth Avenue in concert - they still put on a really great show!

Fourth Avenue - part 2
Posted by Ben Chilcote Sunday, December 20, 2009 0 comments

While in Fourth Avenue we were asked to come back for a second commercial. I forgot to mention that in the first commercial we were officially "menacing urban youth".  In this commercial we were supposed to be like a boy band (I think) - this was when boy bands were still hip!

This commercial was also shot in Columbus at a restaurant (obviously). I don't think it got as much air play as the first one. It was pretty fun to be part of it. During this time we did a whole slew of school shows and we sang the jingle each time. It got kind of old but sort of made us a one-hit wonder in a way... Enjoy!

Fourth Avenue
Posted by Ben Chilcote Friday, December 18, 2009 0 comments

In light of the recent prime-time revival of a cappella I thought I'd do a shout out and a throw back to my vocal band days.

I spent 2001 to 2004 in a professional vocal band called Fourth Avenue.  I held the prestigious title of "tenor".  This was an awesome experience and though the group formed in 1993, they are still together!  You can find out more at www.fourthavenue.com.

One of the highlights of being in the group was our opportunity to make 2 commercials for Safe Auto.  You can watch the first one we made below.  We actually arranged and recorded our own version of the well-known jingle (which is what is heard on the commercial).  It was an interesting experience shooting the spot.  We shot it in Columbus, Ohio during the night.  Honestly, we spent most of our time sitting around in the trailer.  Enjoy!

Website Update
Posted by Ben Chilcote Tuesday, December 8, 2009 0 comments

My blog has been live about a month now and has had a few hundred visitors which include a handful of international visitors.  Hopefully this is only humble beginnings.

After some hard thinking, I had an 'a-ha' moment. I decided to split my website into two sites. Now that I've had more time to think about it, its clear to me that I've been trying to have one website to share two separate areas of my life. So I've created a new website called lifeinthekingdom.com BenChilcote.com will remain as a website to share anything that relates to my creative side of life: music, art, creative projects, etc. Lifeinthekingdom.com will be my main site where I explore life in the Kingdom of God - and one I'll probably be posting on more regularly.

There is an easy way to keep up with any new blog posts. Simply sign up to my RSS Feed and you will receive an email every time I post a new entry. Don't worry, it doesn't put you on any mailing list or anything. In fact you don't get any email unless I post.

Subscribe to www.benchilcote.com:
If you would like to receive updates on my music and other creative projects, CLICK HERE and enter your email address.

Subscribe to www.lifeinthekingdom.com
If you would like to receive updates on my thoughts and discoveries in seeking God's Kingdom, CLICK HERE and enter your email address.

I will still be making a few adjustments to the two blogs as I get the time. Thanks for everyone who has checked out my site so far!

Safe Eyes - Internet Safety
Posted by Ben Chilcote Wednesday, November 25, 2009 0 comments

I'm still young enough that I remember when the internet made it's way into the home offices of my friends and I.  I can't remember if it was American Online or Prodigy, but I remember being at my friend's house when his family was one of the first to get online.  He was able to chat with other people on his computer and it was completely unreal.  He would click his mouse, then we'd hear a phone dialing followed by weird hisses, buzzes and tweets coming from the back of his computer as his modem connected.

In a short time we've come a long way.  The internet is everywhere and part of our everyday lives.  It's pretty darn amazing and has made the world a tiny place.  Though the internet provides great things in our lives, most of us are aware that it also poses a great threat.  Wherever you go online, you are only a click away from danger.  There is a need today more than ever to protect our children from online predators (be it people or companies who push their ads in front of us) as well as accidently stumbling onto content we don't want them to experience.  This goes for us parents, too - especially Dads who are very susceptible to the dangers of online content.

I have tried a number of filters and blockers and one that I now use, and am endorsing here, is Safe Eyes.  Safe Eyes has offered satisfactory protection online.  It has great features and control.  It comes highly rated by many reputable sources.

Internet dangers will continue to grow.  This is why I have an ad for Safe Eyes.  If you click on it it will take you to their website where you can read more about their products and the reason they exist.  Any commissions I receive through this will go back into this ministry.  Don't be ignorant of Internet dangers!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Hey, fellas.  I don't want to miss the opportunity to address this because most of us aren't talking much about it.  If you are finding yourself trapped in a cycle of secret surfing, let me tell you a few things.  First of all, you're not alone so don't be afraid to face it.  Second, don't be fooled into thinking it's not a big deal because it IS.  Men have gone down this road only to find their marriages wrecked and their lives in ruin.  Even if you perceive your internet viewing as harmless, you are playing with fire.  If you are surfing onto sites in secret, you need to do something about it.  A good place to start is www.xxxchurch.com.  This is actually a great resources for husbands AND wives.  Here is another good resource from a man whose life was ruined by his internet use but then restored.

Steven Curtis Chapman - Heaven is the Face
Posted by Ben Chilcote Tuesday, November 24, 2009 1 comments

Steven Curtis Chapman talks about the loss of his daughter and the inspiration behind his new song, Heaven is the Face.  My wife and I were in agreement that we don't know how anyone gets through an ordeal like his family suffered through.  It's a testimony of God's grace that they are able to heal and move forward.  It's the hope we have in Heaven because of what Jesus has done that we are able to move on.  Steven - thank you for sharing your heart with us.  I know you will minister to many who have gone through similar pain and grief.

Warning to the sensitive: You might need to watch with tissues.

It has come to my attention more than one time recently that I have not had to suffer the loss of a close loved one.  There are three people I work with who've each lost family members close to them: siblings, parents, spouses.  Fortunately I have not had to go through such a loss.  I can't imagine the pain one must go through.  What about you?  How have you dealt with loss in your life?  Comment below.

Life lessons from Johnny & Chachi

Some sound advice about marriage.  This video is very funny and well done.  It's funny because it's true.  This is nothing profound, just pure entertainment.

Official Launch
Posted by Ben Chilcote Tuesday, November 10, 2009 0 comments

This blog and my debut song, "In Good Hands" marks the launch of my hobby music career! I just entered a new chapter in life with the birth of my 3rd child on the same day I turned 30.  With the coming of our 3rd, I knew my extra time would be even more limited.  I have had many creative ideas in the works with no definite plans to finish any of them.  I decided to actually complete a project and put it out there in the event this is the last chance I have for a while to devote time to such a project.

As the years come, I hope to release more projects and discuss them on this website.  Until then, I plan to share my thoughts about life, being a pastor, a dad, a husband, and many of the other things I think about.

In the music widget up top you can stream my song in its entirety.  However, if you like the song, consider supporting a local artist by purchasing it (it costs less than a dollar!).  I wouldn't mind at least covering the cost of distribution and copyrighting :)  Also, if you find any of my music worth sharing, please do so.  I have found "In Good Hands" to be a meaningful song to hum to my infant while holding him.

Finally, I'd love your input and feedback.  Leave me a comment.  I'd love to know your thoughts.

-Ben

In Good Hands (Baby Dedication Song)
Posted by Ben Chilcote Saturday, November 7, 2009 0 comments

About the Song
Our Baby Dedication Service was coming up (we do 2 a year at BCC) and the few songs that worked well for the service were getting well worn.  I thought I'd try to write my own song for it.  With a good 5 years of fatherhood behind me, I felt qualified to write about children and dedicating them to the Lord so I went to it.  This is the song that resulted.

While writing the song I relied on God's inspiration and drew from my experience as a father.  Early in marriage, my wife and I faced infertility.  God guided us through 2 wonderful adoption experiences.  Then in February of 2009 God gave us wonderful gift of a natural conception.  Our third child was born on my 30th birthday.  Needless to say, it was an answer to prayer.  We see our children as gifts that God has entrusted to us to care for and raise to be obedient servants of Jesus.

I have found much joy and purpose in singing this song to our newborn.  I hold him and sing this to him.  What a wonderful prayer God has given me to speak into my children's lives.  I pray this song will bless many more parents out there who realize the wonderful and scary task they have as a parent.

Lyrics

In Good Hands
Copyright 2009 Ben Chilcote

I closed my eyes and said a prayer
And when I looked down you were there
And you were placed into my arms
So amazing

Who am I that God would trust
His little one into my love
And now it all seems up to me
You’re small and helpless

Your steps are ordered
Your hairs are counted
I’ve been entrusted
With God’s beloved

How will I teach you how to walk
When I’m so prone to wander off
How will I teach you how to live
To love and give

How will I teach you how to trust
When I don’t keep my promises
How can I teach you all these things
I’m still learning

Your steps are ordered
Your hairs are counted
A life awaits you
Like a fountain

I am the only world you see
Your tiny hand reaches to me

So I take you by the hand
Close my eyes and pray again
Today I place my dreams for you
In His hands

And one day when you are grown
And walk with Jesus on your own
I know you finally will be
In good hands

Through the tears and
Through the laughter
The Lord goes with you
Before and after

He is longing
For the moment
He can walk with
His beloved

Our steps are ordered
Our hairs are counted
He has never
Missed a moment

The Chords
Contact me if you are interested in the chords.  I would be glad to email them with you.  I don't have a way right now to make them downloadable.

The Video

About the Song

This song was a tribute to a man that was (and is) beloved by many. At our church, we went through a rough time in losing our senior pastor. Howard Brammer stepped in as our interim senior pastor. He originally was asked to stay for a number of months but ended up with us for a full year. For his going away dinner, our media director, Brent Thurston, and I worked up this video. I had the crazy idea to have Howard rap and Brent animate it Jib-Jab Style. I had always wanted to write a rap. I can now cross that off my list. Although, I'd really like to write another. All in all, I spent well over 40 hours on the project. Both Brent and I felt we could have done more with more time, but you do what you can! The lyrics are mostly inside jokes and things we knew about Howard.

About Me
Posted by Ben Chilcote Friday, November 6, 2009 2 comments

My name is Ben Chilcote. I have a wife and 3 kids. I am ordained and have worked in full-time Christian ministry since 2004.  I'm an artist, musician and have many other varied and perhaps unusual interests.

Above all, I’ve had a serious relationship with Jesus for most of my life and I continually asking Him how this world – and my life – is supposed to work. Recently He has opened my eyes to His Kingdom and I have began a journey of life transformation.

I feel like God has given me a gift of influence, which I must steward strategically and responsibly.  Through my creative projects and blog posts on this website, I hope to share the things that God is teaching and showing me.  I trust they will be valuable in building up others who are also seeking a life of obedience under the leadership of Jesus.

Sometimes I think I must be crazy.  However, I trust I will find out I am not and that God is faithful.

I'd love to hear from you.  Contact me at benchilcote@gmail.com
